Palaeogenomics of Upper Palaeolithic to Neolithic European hunter-gatherers

Modern humans have populated Europe for more than 45,000 years1,2. Our knowledge of the genetic relatedness and structure of ancient hunter-gatherers is however limited, owing to the scarceness and poor molecular preservation of human remains from that period3. Here we analyse 356 ancient hunter-gatherer genomes, including new genomic data for 116 individuals from 14 countries in western and central Eurasia, spanning between 35,000 and 5,000 years ago.

Näytteiden arkeologisesta kontekstista löytyy seuraavia tietoja.

Ostorf-Tannenwerder, Saksa

"The small island [of] Tannenwerder is located in Lake Ostorf in the city of Schwerin, northern Germany. [...] While typological evidence suggested a Neolithic date, the location of the cemetery on an island is uncommon for this time. Furthermore, the frequent presence of grave goods such as transverse arrowheads, animal tooth pendants sometimes in large numbers, and fish hooks led to the interpretation of a surviving final Mesolithic population. New systematic studies including a series of AMS-dates assign the site to ~5,200 to 4,900 calBP (Funnel Beaker to early Single Grave Culture). The suggested Mesolithic lifestyle of the population is supported by elevated 15^N-values, which indicate regular consumption of freshwater resources. Mesolithic roots for some of the individuals could also be revealed by the first paleogenetic data showing the presence of individuals with U5 mtDNA haplogroups. The Ostorf population was living within a spatially and temporally Funnel Beaker context and adopted some Neolithic cultural elements, but followed a subsistence strategy normally associated with a hunter-gatherer diet."

Balma Guilanyà, Espanja

"Balma Guilanyà is a [late upper paleolithic] rock shelter located in Northeastern Iberia [...] in the Serra de Busa Pre-Pyrenean range (Navés, Lleida [Catalonia]). [...] The material cultural artifacts recovered from the same level as the human remains have been attributed to the Azilian techno-complex. Balma Guilanyà shows clear technical parallels with the near Azilian site Balma Marguineda. However, in general the Azilian is considered to be more common in Vasco-Cantabrian northern Iberia and on the other side of the Pyrenees."

Länsi-Venäjältä, Karjalasta ja Volgan mutkan alapuolelta, ei löytynyt tässä tutkimuksessa N-haploja. Aika näyttää, löytyykö niitä esimerkiksi pohjoisempaa Uralilta suomalaistutkijoiden tulevassa paperissa, kunhan se joskus julkaistaan...

Toisaalta tämän tutkimuksen kanssa julkaistiin samaan aikaan sisartutkimus, jossa oli mielenkiintoista Euroopan aikaisemman väestön geneettiset yhteydet sekä länsi- että itäeuraasialaisiin. Heissä oli siis nähtävissä geeniperimää ajalta, jolloin eurooppalaiset ja aasialaiset eivät olleet vielä eriytyneet toisistaan.

"Genome-wide data from the first Solutrean-associated individual MLZ from Andalucia revealed traces of ancestry from an IUP population that predates the genetic split between European and Asian populations but is still traceable in southern Iberia ~23,000 years ago. This genetic ancestry was also found in the Aurignacian-associated individual Goyet Q116-1, Bacho Kiro and Tianyuan, respectively."

"MLZ carried Y chromosome haplogroup C1 (Supplementary Table 1.2), which was also found in individuals from Bacho Kiro IUP (~45 cal kyr bp, Bulgaria). The more basal Y-haplogroup C was found in Paglicci_133 (~33 cal kyr bp, Italy), Cioclovina_1 (~32 cal kyr bp, Romania) and Kostenki_12 (C, ~32 cal kyr bp, Russia) and the derived Y-haplogroup C1a2 was found in Goyet Q116-1 (~35 cal kyr bp, Belgium) and Sunghir (~34 cal kyr bp, Russia)."

Pohjois-Saksasta löydetty Ostorf (OST003, 5183 BP) näyttää olevan yli tuhat vuotta vanhempi kuin varhaisin Skandinaviasta löydetty I1-mies (NEO220), joka eli noin 4000 vuotta sitten (ks. Allentoft et al. 2022, "Population Genomics of Stone Age Eurasia").

"Y-chromosome haplogroup I1 is one of the dominant haplogroups in present-day Scandinavians, and we document its earliest occurrence in a ~4,000-year-old individual from Falköping in southern Sweden (NEO220)."

Lisäksi Allentoftin paperin perusteella voi ehkä arvailla, että I1-miehet tekivät jonkinlaisen vastaiskun sen jälkeen, kun aroperimää kantaneet R1a- ja R1b-miehet olivat ensin levittäytyneet Skandinaviaan.

"We investigated the fine-scale genetic structure in southern Scandinavia after the introduction of Steppe-related ancestry using a temporal transect of 38 Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age Danish and southern Swedish individuals. Although the overall population genomic signatures suggest genetic stability, patterns of pairwise IBD-sharing and Y-chromosome haplogroup distributions indicate at least three distinct ancestry phases during a ~1,000-year time span: i) An early stage between ~4,600 BP and 4,300 BP, where Scandinavians cluster with early CWC [Corded Ware Culture] individuals from Eastern Europe, rich in Steppe-related ancestry and males with an R1a Y-chromosomal haplotype; ii) an intermediate stage until c. 3,800 BP, where they cluster with central and western Europeans dominated by males with distinct sub-lineages of R1b-L51 and includes Danish 676 individuals from Borreby (NEO735, 737) and Madesø (NEO752) with distinct cranial features; and iii) a final stage from c. 3,800 BP onwards, where a distinct cluster of Scandinavian individuals dominated by males with I1 Y-haplogroups appears. Using individuals associated with this cluster (Scandinavia_4000BP_3000BP) as sources in supervised ancestry modelling, we find that it forms the predominant source for later Iron- and Viking Age Scandinavians, as well as ancient European groups outside Scandinavia who have a documented Scandinavian or Germanic association (e.g., Anglo-Saxons, Goths)."

Karjalasta julkaistiin varsin monta näytettä, mutta ne ovat kaikki kutakuinkin yhtä vanhoja ja esikeraamiselta kaudelta:

Isälinjoja on kolmea päätyyppiä: R1a ja R1b; Q1a; J1
Mainittakoon, että Q1a2-pre-L804 on nimenomaan intiaaneilla esiintyvän M3-linjan veli.

Äitilinjat ovat pelkkää U:ta ja R1b:tä. R1b on sama äitilinja kuin Afontova Gora 3:lla (16,7 kya). U-linjat ovat tarkemmin U5a1, U5a2, U5a2d, U4, U4a2 ja U2e1. Suomalaisille tyypillisiä U5b-linjoja ei löydy.

Karkeasti voisi varmaan sanoa, että R1 ja J1 -isälinjat sekä kaikki U-linjat tulevat etelästä Ukrainan refugin suunnalta ja Q-isälinjat ja R1b-äitilinja Jenisein/Altain suunnalta.

Tätä vahvistavat Vologdan näytteet, jotka ovat etelämpää eli Laatokan eteläpuolelta. Ne ovat äitilinjoiltaan varsin samoja kuin Karjalan näytteet, mutta Q-isälinjat ja R1b-äitilinja puuttuvat.

Sitä vastoin uutta aluetta, joka tulee nyt kartoituksen piiriin, edustavat Murzihinskin näytteet, jotka ovat Volgan mutkasta:

Haplotyypit eivät ole aivan samoja kuin Karjalassa. Isälinjat ovat pelkkää Q1a1-F746/NWT01:tä tai sen esimuotoa. Kaikki äitilinjat edustavat hieman eri haplotyyppejä kuin Karjalassa. Näistä näytteistä kuitenkin ilmenee, mitä isälinjoja Volgan mutkassa oli noin 6000-5000 e.a.a eli Q:ta.

Kaikkein mielenkiintoisin lienee kuitenkin seuraava näyte:

Näyte on varsin vanha eli mesoliittisen ja neoliittisen kauden välimaastosta, ja näyte osoittaa, että Tajikistanin eteläosaa asuttivat ihmiset, jotka olivat lähes pelkkää ANEa eli samaa perimää kuin Malta1 ja Afontova Gora.

Tosiaan, tuo Murzihinskiy II alkaa olla jo varsin kiinnostavalla alueella, eli Kaman varrella Volgan mutkan koilispuolella. En heti hahmottanut sen tarkkaa sijaintia, koska tutkimuksessa sivulla 2 olevaan karttaan ei ole merkitty jokia. Tässä on parempi kartta, jossa sijainti näkyy oikeassa yläkulmassa nimellä Murzikha II:

Mehän tarvitsimme näytteitä Karjalasta aikaväliltä 3500-1000 eaa, sillä tuolla aikavälillä Siperia-perimä ilmeisesti leviää Karjalaan. Harmi jos hautauksia on vain tuolta esikeraamiselta kaudelta. DNA:n säilymisen kannaltahan Karjala antaa toivoa. Jos sieltä saadaan hyviä näytteitä 8000 vuoden takaa, pitäisihän sieltä periaatteessa saada näytteitä myös 5000-3000 vuoden takaa.
